After more than 15 years in Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC, the historic Chesapeake Bay buyboat, Half Shell, has made her way to Solomons, MD.
Built in 1928 in Perrin, Virginia, the Half Shell operated for over 70 years as a buyboat -- similar to the W.B. Tennison at Calvert Marine Museum -- a type of wooden fishing vessel indigenous to the region. Buyboats got their name because they would buy the catch from skipjacks or crab dredging boats, and then sell the catch at market. In between seafood hauls, they were loaded down with watermelons, tomatoes and pumpkins – making their way up and down the bay. Half Shell spent most of her career transporting crabs and oysters from the lower Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, but she also used mechanized tongs to catch oysters on her own.
In January of 2001, Half Shell was acquired by Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region to be an educational vessel for the communities of the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers.
Half Shell Adventures acquired Half Shell in November 2017 and she has since been serving as a unique vessel for recreational cruises. The Half Shell is U.S. Coast Guard certified, 54’ long, and ready to carry up to 42 passengers.
